Planning your first Fiji trip: choose fewer islands and make transfer days count

A calmer island itinerary starts with one region, realistic transfer time and a clear view of meal and transport costs.

Fiji is not one resort strip: the islands and regions offer different trip styles, and moving between them takes planning. Instead of trying to see everything, choose a mainland base or one island group, then leave enough time to enjoy being there.

Start with the kind of holiday you want

Viti Levu is the main island and a practical starting point for Nadi, Denarau, the Coral Coast and travel toward Suva. Mamanuca and Yasawa island stays add boat transfers and a more remote feel. Other islands can mean extra domestic flights or ferry legs. Pick a region based on your pace, activities, accessibility needs and transfer budget—not just a photograph.

Tourism Fiji’s regional guide is useful for comparing island groups. Ask your accommodation which transfer operator serves it, where to board and what luggage limits apply.

Treat transfer days as travel days

Ferries, domestic flights, road transfers and weather can affect island connections. Avoid scheduling a paid activity immediately after a long transfer. If an island boat connects with your international flight, build a generous buffer or consider sleeping near the departure airport the night before.

Confirm whether a hotel’s quoted rate includes transfers, meals, taxes, resort fees and activities. On a remote island, meal plans may be a major part of the total cost because nearby alternatives are limited.

A relaxed five-night structure

  1. Night one: arrive and stay somewhere that makes your onward transfer easy.
  2. Nights two to four: settle into one island or coastal base. Choose one organised outing, one slow day and one flexible day.
  3. Final night: return to a location that gives you a comfortable margin before an international flight, especially if the route depends on a boat or domestic flight.

For a longer trip, add a second region only when the transport connection and the experience are worth the extra packing and transfer time.

Budget for what the resort rate leaves out

  • Airport transfers and inter-island transport
  • Meal plans, snacks and drinking water
  • Day trips, water activities and equipment hire
  • Cash for small purchases where card payment may not be convenient
  • Travel insurance, data and foreign transaction fees

Tourism Fiji notes that costs beyond accommodation can include transfers, ferries, domestic flights, meal plans and tours. Ask for the full list before comparing properties.

Entry and respectful visits

Visa and entry rules depend on nationality and purpose. Check the official Fiji Immigration site for your passport and dates; use the tourism guide as a starting point, not a final eligibility decision. If visiting a village, ask your host or guide about local protocol, appropriate clothing and photography before you go.

Conditions at sea and on land can change. Check current weather and travel advisories, and follow local instructions around swimming, boating and trails.
