Plan a Ho Chi Minh City trip →

Ho Chi Minh City, still widely called Saigon, gives a short visit plenty of possible directions. The useful choices are where to sleep, which streets belong in the same outing and how much energy to leave for the journey back. A riverfront address, a market-side room and an apartment farther east create different daily routes. Keep one base for four days and leave space around traffic, heat and arrival formalities.

Compare streets and landmarks before choosing a base

Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue are worth comparing for a stay focused on central landmarks and evening walks. Near Ben Thanh Market offers a different central starting point, especially when your plans use Ben Thanh metro station. Vietnam’s official city guide helps place the market, central streets and Cholon. Map the exact entrance and crossings between your shortlist and those places.

Thao Dien deserves a separate journey comparison. Test the walk to Thao Dien or An Phu station and the return from your central bookings; an eastern apartment address does not establish a convenient station entrance. These are practical search areas, not statements of administrative boundaries. Compare room windows, cooling, lift access and space for bags. Ask about nearby late activity and the specific room position instead of assuming a whole neighbourhood is quiet or inexpensive.

SGN: confirm the terminal for every flight

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is SGN. International flights use T2, while domestic operations are split between T1 and T3. The Civil Aviation Authority’s airport update confirms that domestic split. Check the terminal on the actual flight, including the operating carrier on a codeshare.

T3 needs a transfer plan when connecting with the older terminals. The authority’s terminal-transfer guidance describes shuttle arrangements; reconfirm the current boarding point and procedure with your airline. Allow for immigration, bags, any recheck and security. For the city journey, compare an authorised taxi, prearranged transfer or currently operating airport bus against the complete hotel address, bags and arrival time. Agree the meeting point and fare basis before travel.

Use Metro Line 1 for the journeys it actually serves

Metro Line 1 runs between Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien, with stops including the Opera House, Ba Son and Thao Dien. The city’s current station information distinguishes the route and station names. It does not reach SGN airport; a planned network map is not an operating airport connection.

Check HURC’s passenger information and station staff for your date. Compare single journeys with time-based tickets, checking activation and coverage. A recent official ticketing notice describes additional identity-app options, but visitors should confirm a purchase method they can use. Do not assume every overseas card, local app or concession works for you, or that a metro ticket covers buses and airport transfers.

Four days with one main focus each

  1. Day one — arrive and orient yourself. Keep the first outing near your room. If time allows, choose a short Dong Khoi or Nguyen Hue walk and a meal. Save paid entry slots for a day with a dependable start.
  2. Day two — the historic central area. Make Independence Palace the main visit, checking its current ticket and exhibition information. Follow with a meal and a manageable walk towards the Central Post Office area. Treat nearby buildings as exterior stops unless you have confirmed interior access.
  3. Day three — Cholon. Travel to a compact route around Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Pagoda, using the national tourism guide to place them. Leave time for the journey, a meal and breaks. This is a separate outing from the central landmark walk; avoid adding an eastern-city reservation that afternoon.
  4. Day four — a market morning or a purposeful metro outing. Return to Ben Thanh for browsing, or choose one destination near a Line 1 station such as Thao Dien after checking the final walk. Keep the afternoon flexible. On a flight day, stay local and collect luggage early enough for the airport journey.

A Cu Chi or Mekong excursion should replace a city day. Confirm its travel time, pickup, return and access with the operator.

Budget for the whole stay and the useful hours

Compare a simple private room, a hotel with reception services and an apartment using the same dates, guests and beds. Record the final total and currency, taxes, service or cleaning charges, deposits and cancellation deadline. Check late check-in, luggage storage and whether an early room is actually included.

Add both airport journeys, daily transport, meals, admission, guided activities, mobile data and currency-conversion costs. Keep shopping separate. An apartment’s kitchen or laundry may help a longer stay; for four days, compare those benefits with reception hours and repeat journeys. Leave an allowance for a direct transfer when rain or luggage changes the plan.

Check the approach, forecast and booking details

Ask directly about the hotel entrance, lift dimensions, bathroom and room layout. For outings, check the station exit and the entire street route, including crossings and the destination entrance. A short distance on a map does not establish a suitable pavement route. Confirm specific access needs with each venue.

Keep outdoor blocks adjustable around the forecast. Heavy rain can disrupt roads and transport; follow local instructions and avoid flooded or damaged areas. Recheck opening notices and leave a sheltered alternative close to the day’s main stop. Save booking details offline and reconfirm pickup locations when an address or meeting point has changed.

Use official entry information for your complete itinerary

The Vietnamese Embassy’s e-visa notice identifies the official portals. Follow their current instructions for your passport and purpose, and read Smartraveller’s Vietnam advice for visa, arrival-document, transit and weather updates. Check every name and passport detail before travel. Do not assume an arrival form replaces a visa or that a visa guarantees admission. This guide cannot determine eligibility. Include any domestic connection or onward country in your planning.
