Plan a Los Angeles trip →

Los Angeles rewards a plan organised by area. A museum, a beach and a Hollywood evening may all belong in the holiday, but placing them on the same day can turn much of it into a journey. For a first four-day stay, choose a base around your main interests, keep one substantial commitment each day and compare transport for the actual addresses before booking a cheaper room further away.

Hollywood, Downtown or a beach base?

Hollywood deserves consideration when film-related sights and evenings nearby are priorities. The official Los Angeles tourism guide helps orient the district. Check the property's precise location and your return route: Hollywood is an area, not a promise that every attraction is a short walk from every hotel.

Downtown Los Angeles can work for an arts-focused visit and onward public-transport connections. Compare the street-level route to the station you will use, rather than judging convenience from a city-centre label. For a beach-led holiday, consider Santa Monica and use its official tourism information to explore the coastal setting. It is a different base from Hollywood or Downtown; price the journeys to your chosen attractions before assuming you will cross the region every day.

For four days, one well-chosen base is often easier than switching hotels. If your trip mainly revolves around a particular studio, theme park or event, locate that address first and build the accommodation shortlist around it.

Choose the airport transfer before deciding on a car

Confirm the airport code and terminal on your booking. For LAX, compare the airport's current ground-transport options with your hotel address, arrival time and luggage. Pickup arrangements can change during airport works; use current airport instructions rather than an old arrival screenshot.

Metro's LAX guide describes the C and K line connection at LAX/Metro Transit Center, with a shuttle between that centre and the airline terminals. It also identifies FlyAway buses between the terminals and Union Station or Van Nuys. Compare the entire route, including the onward journey and last walk. A service to Union Station is not automatically a transfer to a Hollywood or coastal hotel.

Then decide whether a rental car helps on particular days. Include collection, fuel, hotel and attraction parking, and return time. A car adds flexibility for some routes; it can also sit unused during a museum visit while still costing money.

Four days with clear geographical priorities

  1. Day one — arrive and explore your base. Leave bags if available, eat locally and keep the first afternoon flexible. Avoid placing an expensive timed activity immediately after a long flight.
  2. Day two — Hollywood and Griffith. Spend a manageable part of the day around Hollywood, then consider Griffith Observatory if its opening days and your transport plan fit. Read the official visiting information for building access, programme arrangements and how to get there. The uphill journey deserves its own plan; do not treat a nearby map pin as an easy walk.
  3. Day three — choose one substantial art visit. For a Downtown day, consider The Broad and leave time for nearby streets and a meal. Alternatively, make the Getty Center the main outing and plan around its location and reservation. These are different day shapes, rather than two museums to squeeze between other commitments.
  4. Day four — a coastal day or a local finish. With a full non-flight day, spend unhurried time around Santa Monica. If already staying by the coast, use the day for the local places you have missed. Before a flight, replace the distant outing with a nearby morning and a comfortable airport margin.

Move the days to match venue calendars and your actual arrival and departure times. A major studio or theme-park booking should replace a day in this outline. For a shorter visit, remove a whole area rather than trying to shorten every journey.

Compare the hotel and transport as one total

Use identical dates, guest ages, beds and room categories for each quote. Record the final stay amount in the currency charged, then check taxes, mandatory property charges, parking, breakfast and deposits shown by the provider. Add your airport transfer and the local journeys the address creates.

Compare an apartment's kitchen and space with its cleaning charges, minimum stay and arrival arrangements. For a hotel, ask about luggage storage and late arrival. Read the cancellation deadline in local time and check whether the rate is prepaid. Keep attraction tickets, meals and flexible transport separate so a cheaper room does not hide a more expensive daily plan.

Reserve the right visit and check the whole access route

The Getty Center requires a timed entry reservation even though admission is free; parking has a separate charge. The Broad recommends advance timed tickets for general admission, while some exhibitions or experiences have separate arrangements. Follow the official visitor pages for the visit you actually want, rather than assuming one booking includes everything.

Check venue opening days, access notices and transport disruptions close to travel. If walking distance, steps or mobility needs affect your trip, check the station exit, hillside approach, property entrance and room layout. For outdoor plans, allow shade, breaks and a weather alternative. A view or an accessible building does not establish that every approach route suits your group.

Check the local dates and entry requirements

Compare hotel nights with the local arrival and departure dates printed on your airline itinerary. Ask what happens if you arrive before check-in, and keep the final activity close to luggage collection. Use Smartraveller's current United States advice and its official US authority links for the entry and travel requirements relevant to your passport and circumstances. A hotel reservation or this itinerary does not determine entry eligibility.

If another US city is part of the holiday, give it separate travel time and accommodation nights. The New York guide can help plan that separate city stay.
