Paris rewards a plan with fewer changes of direction. Choose a base for the walks and evenings you want, reserve the visit that matters most, and leave space around it. Four useful days can include a major museum, different neighbourhoods and the river without treating every landmark as an appointment. Flight arrival and departure dates may leave much less usable time than the number of hotel nights suggests.
Pick a base for the return journey after dinner
Le Marais makes a useful shortlist for an eastern central base; Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter suit a Left Bank focus. Compare Opéra and the Grands Boulevards when shopping and a central Right Bank route appeal. Bastille–République is another option for evenings around restaurants and bars. The tourist office’s district guide helps locate these areas.
Choose the exact street, rather than an arrondissement number alone. Map the station exit, hotel entrance and a route home after dinner. Ask about street-facing rooms if noise matters. Montmartre can be appealing for a neighbourhood stay, but its hill and your daily connections deserve a separate check. For a short visit, moving hotels usually costs more useful hours than it adds.
Separate the airport journey from ordinary city travel
Read the airport code on the flight booking: Charles de Gaulle is CDG; Orly is ORY. Current rail options include the RER B for CDG and metro line 14 for Orly. The official airport-ticket page explains the relevant coverage. Its rail ticket does not include buses or trams, so check the last connection to your hotel separately.
A flight labelled Paris–Beauvais needs another transfer plan: the official Beauvais Aérobus is excluded from that airport rail ticket. Compare the whole airport journey before accepting a cheaper flight. For any arrival, include terminal navigation, luggage, the final walk and the services actually running at your landing time. A group or late arrival may justify a different door-to-door option.
Choose a pass against your actual dates and journeys
A Navigo Weekly Pass runs from Monday to Sunday; it is not seven days starting when you first use it. Compare that fixed week, the chosen zones, the eligible phone or pass and your airport route with individual tickets or another visitor product. Orlyval is excluded from Navigo Week, even though it is included in the separate airport rail ticket.
Do not buy a pass simply because the itinerary says “four days”. A stay crossing Sunday and Monday needs a different calculation. Check current purchase and validation instructions, and read service alerts before committing to a tight airport connection.
Build four days around neighbouring places
- Arrival, the Marais and the river: settle in, have a meal and choose a modest walk towards ĂŽle Saint-Louis or the surrounding riverbanks. If you arrive late, keep just the local evening. Leave timed sightseeing for a day with a reliable start.
- Louvre and the central Right Bank: give the museum the main part of the day, then choose the Tuileries or a shorter Palais-Royal walk. Check the Louvre’s current calendar and reservations; it closes on Tuesdays. Reorder the days around opening dates and choose a few collections instead of trying to finish the building.
- A Left Bank day: combine Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Latin Quarter and a break around the Luxembourg Gardens. If a museum is the priority, replace part of the walk with that visit. Keep lunch and the afternoon in the same broad area.
- The western river and Eiffel Tower area: make a booked tower visit the main commitment, with time nearby rather than another distant attraction. The official tower page distinguishes floor and stair/lift tickets and warns that summit access can be restricted. If leaving that day, choose a shorter local morning instead.
Montmartre can replace one of these neighbourhood days. Versailles or Disneyland needs a separate day choice; adding either means removing a Paris day, rather than compressing the whole plan into the remaining evenings.
Compare the stay total and the time it buys
For a simpler budget, compare a private hostel room or compact hotel with a well-connected hotel further from your chosen sights. For more space, investigate an aparthotel and whether its kitchen will actually replace meals out. A central hotel may cost more while reducing repeated transfers; a cheaper room is useful only when its route works for your group.
Keep the same nights, occupancy and bed setup in every quote. Record taxes and local tourist tax shown or payable separately, breakfast, deposits, cancellation deadlines and the currency charged. Add airport transfers, daily transport, meals and the specific attractions you intend to enter. Check lift access, room size and cooling rather than assuming the property category guarantees them.
Check the route for access and the season
The nearest metro station does not necessarily provide a step-free journey. Use RATP’s accessibility information to plan suitable routes and check lift availability; some stops on accessible bus routes may still be unsuitable. Confirm the accommodation entrance, lift dimensions and bathroom arrangements directly when these affect the stay.
For warm dates, ask about the room’s cooling and build in indoor breaks. For shorter daylight or wet conditions, shorten outdoor walks and keep a nearby alternative. Recheck attraction calendars, transport works and the forecast close to departure.
